How do nominees to public bodies get tagged as supporters of a particular political party? I have always found it fascinating how, in Italy, nominees to various posts in Rai are very often tagged as being close to a particular party - or, failing that, to a particular political area.
Reading George Talbot’s book, Censorship in Fascist Italy, I’ve found that this process at least has worthy historical roots: Francesco Crispi (Prime Minister 1887-91, 1893-1896)
“required prefecfts to keep a register and make quarterly reports on all local periodicals, in which they were to supply details of political leanings, the interests the papers represented, and the sources of their funding” (p. 24)
Is it naive to think this didn’t happen in other countries at the time?
(Whether this tags are accurate or not is another question: I’ve had interviewees dispute the tags newspapers have given them).
