    Italian polling update, 29-02-08

One new poll from Demopolis (fieldwork 25th to 28th, not yet posted on www.sondaggipoliticoelettorali.it) shows the gap between the two coalitions holding at 8%.

How does this translate into seats in the Senate? In previous projections, I had assumed that the Senate seats abroad would remain roughly as they were. However, Roberto D’Alimonte suggests that the [...]

Italian polling update, 28-02-08: 8% gap

Two new polls added today from Ipsos and Crespi. The gap between the two coalitions has levelled off. According to the trend line, the PdL has an eight point advantage over the PD and friends.

Two things to note. First, the Sinistra Arcobaleno is having a bad campaign so far. Bertinotti doesn’t sound enthused about the [...]

How to lie/mislead with trend lines

Recently, there’s been a minor polling skirmish about the size of the PdL’s lead. As Ilvo Diamanti puts it in a wonderful column,
the polls that Berlusconi personally commissions, projects and releases give the PdL a ten point advantage over the PD. Not 6, as instead suggest the faked polls commissioned by the PD and the [...]

    Italian election update, 27-02-08

No new polls published today on sondaggipoliticoelettorali.it. Instead, there’s news on coalition tactics: the centre-right can still eke out a majority in the Senate with the vote-share its projected, and the UDC and Rosa Bianca may be close to an agreement.
First, the PdL. Representatives from Forza Italia and Alleanza Nazionale have been working on joint [...]

    Italian polling update, 26-02-08

It’s funny how one or two polls can change the shape of a trend line. It seems that the PD’s rally has come to a stop. That’s certainly seen on today’s graph, which is updated up to today’s Euromedia poll (fieldwork: 22/02/08). Other polling sites have the PD going backwards because they include a Crespi [...]

    Board appointments at CBC

    From Inside CBC.com:
Late last week, the federal government appointed three new members to the CBC Board of Directors. Two of the three have strong ties to the Conservative party.
Opposition MPs claimed the appointments to the CBC Board were part of a larger strategy to fill vacancies on federal Boards in advance of a possible federal [...]

    Interview with Erik Fichtelius

My interview this morning with Erik Fichtelius started with a misunderstanding: I had implied that he had come from the party press, when in fact he had been a foreign correspondent with Aftonbladet – hardly the same thing. He went further though, and said that I had the wrong outlook on journalism in Sweden: the [...]

    Italian polling update, 25-02-08

One update from SWG with field work dating back to the 18th shows that Berlusconi’s lead is still narrow, or narrowing. For the first time, pollsters are presenting voters with a full, non-hypothetical list of options to choose from:

    Partito Democratico
    Italia dei Valori
    Sinistra Arcobaleno
    Partito Comunista di lavoratori
    Partito Socialista
    Partito Radicale
    Rosa Bianca
    UDC
    Partito del Popolo delle Libertà
    Lega Nord
    La Destra [...]

    Okrent’s law

From the Wikipedia entry on Daniel Okrent:
He is known for coining “Okrent’s Law” during his tenure as a comment he made about his new job. It states: “The pursuit of balance can create imbalance because sometimes something is true,” referring to the phenomenon of the press providing legitimacy to fringe or minority viewpoints.

    Italian polling update, 23-02-2008

The centre-left continues its ascent, as Berlusconi raises – and doubles back on – the possibility of a grand coalition should there be a hung Senate.
These projections now include, for the first time, the Radicali, who earlier this week concluded an agreement with the Partito Democratico. See notes on projections.
