The Big Five press groups in Italy

Figures in brackets are 2007 market share, taken from Agcom’s 2008 report:

  1. Gruppo Editoriale l’Espresso: owns Repubblica, wide holdings in localnewspaper market; the Espresso [weekly]; radio holdings and (minor) TV holdings (26.9%)
  2. RCS Mediagroup: owns the Corriere della Sera and the Gazzetta dello Sport; specialist magazine holdings (26.8%)
  3. Il Sole 24 Ore: eponymous newspaper and its associated offspring (11.5%)
  4. Caltagirone Editore: Il Messaggero, Il Mattino, Leggo, Il Gazzettino (10.4)
  5. Poligrafici Editori: Resto del Carlino, La Nazione, Il Giorno (8.5)

The Herfindahl Hirschman Index of concentration is 1,820. Must now find out analogous figures for the UK…

Update: the HHI for the UK in 1993 [old data, using circulation, not market share] was 2723, so actually higher. Contrariwise, a 1993 Competition Commission report suggests that using revenue share, concentration is 1,611 (moderately concentrated, and less thna Italy).
