    I agree with Erhard Jacobsen?

    Jacobsen quote from 1974:
Man tror Gud hjælpe mig, at ytringsfriheden betyder ytringsfrihed for Danmarks Radios medarbejdere. Det er en misforståelse. Den ytringsfrihed fastsættes her i radiorådet
But God help me, if freedom of expression means freedom of expression for Danish Radio employees. That’s a misunderstanding. Freedom  of expression is secured here on the broadcasting board.
    Jacobsen was [...]

    Paper on pluralism

Presented at the ASMI Conference over the weekend. From the abstract:
In this paper I argue that the concept of pluralism – the most important value in
the Italian media debate – is conceptually confused. I identify three mutually incom-
patible conceptions of pluralism used when discussing the public broadcaster Rai: (1)
structural pluralism, satisfied when the public [...]

    Why I like La Stampa

If only it had local news for the area in which I live, I would buy La Stampa as my newspaper of choice instead of Repubblica.
This quote, from Valerio Castronovo’s Fiat, made me even more inclined to like the Turin-based newspaper:
“Torino non era il luogo più adatto per un gran funambolo qual era Malaparte… perché [...]

Why hasn’t the left done more about Berlusconi’s conflict of interest? Part 2

A second argument, also used by Ginsborg, is that they didn’t do more because they were afraid it would be unpopular. That is, many centre-left politicians reasoned something like this:

anyone who would support our taking action against Berlusconi is likely to vote for us anyway; but
there are a large number of people who would oppose [...]

Why hasn’t the left done more about Berlusconi’s conflict of interest?

Assume that the left hasn’t done that much to tackle the issue of Berlusconi’s conflict of interest. Why not?
One explanation might be that many parties within the broad left-wing coalitions, and many individuals within Italian politics more generally, are inclined to forgive past crimes in order to make life easier or to avoid division.
    This is [...]

True twelve years ago, true today

From Matt Frei’s Italy: The Unfinished Revolution (Sinclair-Stevenson, London, 1996):
“The… consequence of appointing news editors because they represent the right faction rather than the right qualifications is simply that the quality of much of the broadcasting on Rai is sloppy and substandard. News footage tends to look as shaky and out of focus as a [...]

My Linux set-up after a fresh install

Recently I had to do a fresh install of Ubuntu. I thought it might be useful to note down the packages that I installed afterwards, both as an aide-memoire for myself and for the curiosity of others – perhaps even those political scientists who use some kind of Linux/LaTeX combination.
All of these packages can be [...]
